Return to a Real Shaving Experience

The best a man can get (not quite!), I’m probably showing my age if that tagline isn’t still on the product ad.

The era of disposable shaving heads with huge amounts of marketing has misguided young men into an expensive and irritating shaving experience. Once again our grandfathers had it right.

A return to the Double Edged Safety Razor such as an Edwin Jagger along with a box of 100 Derby blades (which will last you 2years) can restore this daily chore into a manly experience of self care.

The multi-blade shaving heads marketed to us create a great deal of irritation on younger skin. The simplicity and sharpness of a double edge blade will get you to a smooth and irritation free skin. Replace the plastic with a chromed-metal experience that glides over your face.

What you need

  • A good quality, but inexpensive razor such as an Edwin Jagger DE89
  • A pack of blades, Derby blades are one of my favourites, and inexpensive
  • A shaving brush, don’t go to cheap on this one as the brush makes a massive difference to the experience. Try for something with badger bristles. There are some great synthetic alternatives too. Stick with a brand such as Proraso and you should be good to go for a quality shaving experience.
  • A shaving bowl if possible, if not you can foam the shaving soap or cream in the palm of your hand
  • A good quality shaving cream or soap.
  • Alcohol free after-shave. I really like something along the lines of Bluebeards Revenge

If you find a physical or online store that sells both the razor and some blades, you can usually trust the other items they sell are quality and made to work together.

Get started with a real shave

Shaving with a safety razor is a simple skill, resulting in a smooth shave while reducing irritation and promoting healthier skin. To get started, it’s crucial to prepare your skin properly. Begin by hydrating your skin with warm water. Shaving after a shower or applying a warm, damp towel to your face for a few minutes helps soften the hair and open the pores. Follow this by cleansing your face with a gentle face wash to remove any dirt and oils, ensuring a clean slate for shaving.

Next, choose a high-quality shaving cream or soap, steering clear of aerosol can foams that often contain drying agents. Using a shaving brush, whip the cream or soap into a rich lather. Apply the lather to your face in circular motions to lift the hairs and exfoliate the skin, creating an ideal surface for shaving.

When you’re ready to shave, assemble your safety razor, making sure the blade is securely and correctly placed. Hold the razor at a 30-degree angle to your skin, letting the weight of the razor do the work without applying too much pressure. Begin your first pass by shaving in the direction of hair growth, using short, even strokes and rinsing the razor frequently to keep it clean. Re-lather your face before each pass to maintain lubrication, and if desired, proceed to a second pass shaving across the grain for a closer shave. For an ultra-smooth finish, you can do a third pass against the grain, but be cautious as this can increase the risk of irritation and nicks.

After shaving, rinse your face with cool water to close the pores and soothe the skin. Apply an alcohol-free aftershave balm to moisturise and calm any irritation. Avoid products with alcohol, as they can dry out and irritate the skin.

Blade maintenance is key to a good shave. Replace the blade regularly to avoid using a dull blade, which can cause nicks and irritation. Additionally, keep your safety razor clean and dry to prolong its lifespan and ensure a smooth shave each time. Patience is essential for those new to safety razors. Take your time, as mastery comes with practice.

Shaving with a safety razor can become a satisfying ritual, providing a close, comfortable shave while being gentler on your skin and wallet. Embrace the experience and enjoy the benefits of this traditional shaving method.
